The Legal Aid Authority

The Legal Aid Authority is a national authority that handles legal aid under the Legal Aid Act. The Legal Aid Authority is also the collection authority when a court has decided that there is an obligation, for example, to pay the costs of defence counsel in criminal cases.

There are eight people working at the Legal Aid Authority, dealing with legal aid decisions, handling payment of legal aid costs and processing demands. The Legal Aid Authority is administered jointly with Sundsvall District Court and the Tenancy Tribunal in Sundsvall. Among other things, this means the authorities have a joint reception. The Chief Judge at Sundsvall District Court is also the head of the Legal Aid Authority.

Collection authority

The Legal Aid Authority functions as a collection authority in matters concerning payment of the state's legal aid costs as well as costs in criminal cases.
